5 Dr. Seuss Books for Early Readers

Dr. Seuss is perhaps the most beloved children’s author of the twentieth century. Generations have grown up with his rhymes and illustrations, and his stories have been turned into movies, television shows, and even musicals. One of the reasons kids love Dr. Seuss is that his stories are so easy to read. Many of Seuss’s books were written especially for brand-new readers. In honor of his birthday, the boys and I put together a list of our favorite Dr. Seuss books that are perfect for those just learning to read. My five-year-old loves reading these to us, and we think your kids will love reading them, too.

Green Eggs and Ham – Dr. Seuss wrote this book after being challenged by his editor to create a story using less than 50 words. Seuss not only did so; he created one of the best-loved children’s books of all time.

The Cat in the Hat – This classic that has been adapted in numerous ways is also the perfect choice for beginning readers.

Hop on Pop – This is the first Dr. Seuss book my son read, and is a great place to start with your early reader.

Fox in Socks – This one recommends you read it slowly the first time through, because this fox is tricky! He’s also a lot of fun.

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish – This is my favorite of the list, just because it’s so silly. Your child will giggle as he practices his reading.

Currently, Amazon has a bundle featuring all of these books in their hardcover version for less than $30. What a great gift for your child or your classroom!
