Author Donald J. Sobol, famous for the Encyclopedia Brown series of books, passed away July 11 from natural causes. He was 87 years old. Sobol was dedicated to his craft, authoring 80 books and writing every day until the end of his life.
I read my first Encyclopedia Brown book as a first grader when one came in my Weekly Reader Book Club set. I was immediately hooked; the hero Leroy “Encyclopedia” Brown was so stinking smart! He was always able to solve the mysteries in his town. My favorite character, however, was the smart sidekick Sally Kimball. My friend Ryan and I spent many days on the playground trying to solve the mysteries without flipping to the back of the book for the answer.
These books hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait until my boys are old enough to read them. Sobol’s newest book, Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Soccer Scheme will be published in October. I look forward to picking it up, for old time’s sake, and seeing if I can finally solve the mystery.
