I was in elementary school when I first started looking for Waldo. I spent what seemed like hours staring at the pages of Martin Handford’s Where’s Waldo Where's Waldobooks, trying to find Waldo’s glasses and striped shirt. So when I heard Waldo was celebrating his 25th birthday, I was…disturbed. Was it really that long ago that I started hunting for Waldo? Am I really that old?

Despite the fact that he made me feel like an old lady, I am really excited for Waldo’s birthday. Candlewick Press and the American Bookseller’s Association are partnering to host scavenger hunts for Waldo all over the country. Independent bookstores, along with other local businesses, will be hosting the Find Waldo Local campaign. Kids will be able to collect prizes based on how many “I Found Waldo at _______” cards they collect from the various businesses participating. The project hopes to encourage families to shop at local stores, including local independent booksellers.

Is your city hosting a Find Waldo Local event? Even if you don’t have an event close to you, you can still get in on the Waldo fun. Candlewick Press offers a Where’s Waldo Activity Kit that has some great activities for both younger and older kids. Create your own games and have fun finding Waldo in your home or classroom!
